Submission Guidelines

The Urban Review invites you to submit articles, poems, maps, and more–any content related to urban studies and planning, including closely related fields such as real estate, public policy, and environmental health. 

Our goal is to curate a variety of interdisciplinary material across mediums. We seek to engage readers through an array of topics that reflect the breadth and diversity of work and life that exist in settlements and sites linked to urbanization across the globe. This includes central “urban” areas, as traditionally understood, like cities and towns, as well as any other territory theoretically or empirically related to broader processes of urbanization. These may include desakota, hinterland, operational landscapes, rural-urban transition zones, rural areas, economic corridors, infrastructure networks, and the many other peri-urban territories and processes currently being theorized.

Rolling Submissions

Have any ideas you’ve been kicking around for a while? Just wrote an awesome paper for a class, or created a visualization you’re proud? Just thought of something fascinating you were able to research in the nonexistent time between classes and homework? We want to know! 

We will review and post rolling submissions to the website periodically throughout the year. Please submit your work through this form any time throughout the year. 

Since will prioritize our editing and review work for our formal editions (see, and given that we all have hectic schedules, our response will likely be delayed, but will get back to you as soon as we are able.


General Submission Guidelines

The Urban Review welcomes submissions from Harvard students, faculty, alumni, and friends, as well as students from other schools, on topics broadly related to urban studies, planning theory, and planning practice. Content may include, but is not limited to: personal reflections on planning education and practice, and ongoing topics of concern or relevance; book reviews; conference highlights; existing student work; internship/work experiences; long-form articles and analysis; photos; artwork; and poems. Whatever the specific topic, submission type, and medium, it must be within or highly relevant to the field of urban studies or planning. 

All written content must follow basic English convention. Authors are expected to present their ideas in a clear manner, edit for grammar and cite where appropriate. The Editorial Board will help authors to ensure that their submission is publication-ready. This publication follows the APA citation style.


Long-form articles

Articles can be theoretical, empirical, or practical in nature. Our suggested length for long-form articles is 2000-6000 words. Authors who wish to deeply pursue a specific topic of interest are encouraged to submit long-form articles. While there are no restrictions on format, authors are encouraged to look at convention for guidance. This may include ordering their manuscript with: a title page; abstract; introduction; a body (which may include methods, results, discussion, analysis, and so on); conclusion; references; and appendices, as appropriate.

Short articles

Short articles allow authors to present their ideas quickly and with impact. Suggested lengths are between 800-1200 words. Short articles can be conceptualized similar to published content from major news outlets. They may also include book reviews, conference highlights, and reflections on an internship or work experience, among other possibilities.

Other works

Authors wishing to submit content in other formats can submit their work directly or send a short interest statement to inform the Editorial Board of their ideas. Other formats include poetry, photos, photo essays, artwork, visualizations, and maps, among others. The Editorial Board will work closely with authors intending to publish in other creative formats and strongly encourage prospective authors to reach out with any questions or concerns.
